Missoula’s Favorite Farm Stands

Your.jpg

If Monday’s cold snap didn’t make it obvious, fall is coming and with it, harvest. Don’t have a garden? Don’t worry. Neighborhood farm stands are the next best thing, helping you bring home locally grown fruits, veggies and even other grocery staples like cheese, eggs, and meat! We asked our readers about their favorite farm stands, and here’s what they said:

Turner Farms

Turner Farms was established in 2008. The family expanded their dream in 2017 when they acquired an adjoining piece of land with a rickety red barn on it. They fixed it up and now it’s the most adorable farm stand. The stand is open 24/7, thanks to the honor system. The family accepts Venmo, PayPal, cash or check.

Bonus! Every year Turner Farms hosts a pumpkin patch that serves as a project and fundraiser for Hawthorne Elementary.

Man cannot live on bread (and fruits and vegetables) alone. Wanna beef up your meals? Head to Oxbow Cattle Company and check out their f2m (farm to market) store. Here’s an abbreviated list of what you can get year round: Rib Eye Steaks, New York Steaks, Flat Iron Steaks, Sirloin Steaks, Tenderloin Fillet Steaks, Flank Steaks, Ground Ribeye/New York, Ground Sirloin, Stew Meat, Roasts, Brisket, Ribs, Tri-tip, and more. They also have swag: T-shirts, hats, and other items allow you to sport the name of your favorite rancher. Check out using the honor system, and pay with cash or Venmo.

Red Hen Farm

If you want a little experience with your farm stand, you’ll love the u-pick component of Red Hen Farm. Open from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., the farm sells organically grown strawberries, raspberries, currants, honeyberries, and a wide variety of vegetables & herbs, many of which you can pick yourself with the family. The orchard at Red Hen Farm grows peach, pear, plum, and apples. Check their Facebook page for updates.

Frank’s little farm

If you’re driving in the center of town, you might notice the friendly farm stand sign that reads Frank’s Little Farm in cheery blue ink. Take a closer look and you’ll find beefy tomatoes, colorful peppers, and stout heads of broccoli. In the spring, check it out for plant starts. Open seven days a week, the farm stand operates on the honor system. If you want more consistent produce, sign up for their CSA.

Getting there

Frank’s Little Farm Stand is located at 203 North Curtis Street. You’ll find the farm stand on the corner of Curtis and Wyoming streets, east of Reserve Street.

McPherson’s produce

Up for a drive south? Visit McPherson’s Produce, located in rural Stevensville. The McPherson farm is generations old, and you’ll find the patriarch’s grandchildren running around tending the fruits and vegetables. Their stand is flanked by old tractors, and the produce inside is abundant. We recommend visiting McPherson’s this in late September or early October when the leaves have changed colors and picking up your pumpkins at McPherson’s. Keep an eye out for their potato dig, where McPherson’s invites the community to pick potatoes for the food bank.

Getting there

Located at 457 Willoughby Lane in Stevensville, take Highway 93 South and turn east at Bell Crossing, which will turn into Willoughby Lane.
