According to the National Bison Association, just one out of every 10 million buffalo born are white. This occurrence is so rare, it was often considered sacred by Native Americans. According to the American Indian College Fund, many years ago a beautiful woman dressed in white appeared to some members of the Lakota tribe many years ago, promising an end to their starvation if they continued to follow the proper path while on earth. The woman disappeared and a white bison calf surrounded by a large herd of bison manifested before their eyes. Their hunger ended.
