Featured Camp: Learning With Meaning

If your kid is anything like mine, they likely enjoy planes, rockets, and things that go boom in the air. Words like “launch” and “fire” are part of the vernacular around here. So last year while I was researching camps, Learning With Meaning’s Projectile’s Camp caught my eye.

Part STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills, part construction, and a whole lot of socializing with like-minded kids, Projectiles summer camp is all about shooting things in the air, whether it be with rubber bands, slingshots, or catapults. The group will also work in front of computers, using software to test explosions in various ways.

I credit a lot of Asher's interest in the technology sciences with the foundation he established at Projectiles Camp. Every day that Asher, who was 8 at the time, came home from camp, he regaled us with stories about what he built and how well it worked. Projectiles Camp launched an interest beyond the camp hours and Asher ended the week shooting off rockets with his grandpa, who used to work at NASA and is a former AirForce Navigator, in the field behind our house. We loved watching those rockets shoot off into the sky and knowing Papaw and Asher were creating memories to last a lifetime.

And that’s not all. Learning With Meaning also offers other STEM camps like Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Lego League, and others. Kids who are curious about making a video game, building a robot to battle with other robots or designing and 3d printing custom designs will love these camps! See each week of their “Innovate STEM” camps here.

Summer is an excellent time to spend all day outside, and Learning With Meaning’s Naturecraft Camps make that possible. Campers will learn how our ancestors lived by practicing traditional skills from around the world. Camp guides focus on nature awareness, character building activities, and traditional crafts and skills. There will be swimming, playing, cooking yummy food, and hanging out around the campfire.

Each week of Naturecraft Camp is named based on its theme: There’s Survive, Hunt, Gather, and Thrive. I’m intrigued by the Hunt week because campers will be learning archery!

If hiking, exploring, and discovering nature’s treasures is more your child’s speed, Learning With Meaning is offering Forest School on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the summer. My 5-year-old daughter attended Forest School last fall and I was impressed by the way the teachers guide collaborative play and imagination with connecting with the outdoor world. It’s a great way to establish a love of outdoors and encourage students to learn outside the four walls of a classroom. Forest School will be offered during two 4 week sessions this summer. The first is from June 21-July 16 and the second is from July 26-August 20. Each week, we will gather on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00-3:30.
